Did YOU know?

There’s usually a lot to unpack in a product label. Sometimes, such as when the product is a drug or supplement, there isn’t enough room on the label to list all the side effects and interactions so it spills over into a little pamphlet with tiny writing that you have to magnify to understand.

Alcohol, ‘booze’ doesn’t have that problem.

Even though it is a substance we consume, and Health Canada has issued a lot of information on their website about the risks of consuming alcohol, like the ones above, but there’s no requirement or offer to put it on the label where consumers can see it when they use it – like on OTC Tylenol.

The search result below is for over the counter Tylenol risks. The highlighted sections also apply to alcohol.

Tylenol, which contains acetaminophen, is widely used for pain relief and fever reduction. While it is generally safe when used as directed, there are significant risks associated with its use, particularly concerning liver health.
Liver Damage
Overdose Risk: Taking more than the recommended dosage can lead to severe liver damage. This can occur from a single large dose or from taking smaller doses over time that cumulatively exceed safe limits.
Symptoms of Overdose: Early signs may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and confusion. In severe cases, symptoms can progress to jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes) and may require liver transplantation or can be fatal.

Pre-existing Conditions: Those with liver disease or other health issues should consult a healthcare provider before using acetaminophen.
Conclusion
While Tylenol is effective for pain and fever, it is crucial to use it responsibly. Always adhere to dosage guidelines, be aware of other medications containing acetaminophen, and consult a healthcare professional if you have any concerns about its use.

But there is none of that cluttering up the label on your favorite rum or beer, there is also no little pamphlet to magnify to read all of that. If you want that information in a succinct easy access ‘place’ like the label, you won’t find it in Canada – You can go to the Health Canada website for information, or google it.

Alcohol can kill you in one day. It doesn’t even tell you to be cautious on the label. That seems somehow irresponsible.
